Beyond Open offered an array of awareness outreach and supports to applicants, many of whom were applying for the first time to a small business grant or loan program. These supports included live and virtual application support sessions, a step-by-step Beyond Open Application Guide, FAQs, key application question guidance, and other materials in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Beyond Open partnered with a network of community organizations to offer additional assistance, including application workshops and 1:1 applicant supports. These partner organizations include: ASPIRE Community Capital, Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce, Charlotte Alliance Foundation, Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce, City Startup Labs, Historic West End Partners, Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte, North End Community Coalition, Prospera, Veterans Bridge Home, Vietnamese Association of Charlotte, and the Women’s Business Center of Charlotte.
What is Beyond Open?
Beyond Open is a competitive small business grant program centered on building economic mobility in the Charlotte community including diverse-owned (minority, woman, veteran, LGBTQ, persons with disabilities) small businesses located in the Corridors of Opportunity, as designated by the City of Charlotte.
Grant awards can be used for capital assets such as equipment, technology, inventory and real estate, and do not need to be repaid.
Beyond Open has awarded a combined total of $16.3M in direct grants to 402 small business owners and select nonprofits, exceeding its original commitment of $15M across three rounds.
